Pregnancy – What Chiropractic Can Do For You
Reduce pain in labour: Research shows that correct alignment of the pelvis and spine contribute to a more straightforward labour with less pain and trauma for mother and child. Studies are now looking into the effects of in-utero constraints on foetal development.
Reduce labour time: For women who have received chiropractic care through their pregnancy, a study has shown that there was a 24% reduction in labour time for first time mothers while experienced mothers gained on average a 39% reduction in labour time.
Reduce stress: When we’re stressed we produce chemicals which can cause physiological changes in the body. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to increase levels of dopamine and certain endorphins which give a sense of wellbeing. Studies show that people receiving chiropractic care are less affected by stress, have more energy, think more clearly and have greater quality of life.
Reduce aches, pains and other symptoms: Postural and hormonal changes means the body is put under increased physical stress, this can lead to pains and pelvic constrictions that can affect the movement of the developing baby and therefore the ease of the birth. Chiropractic adjustments can ensure that the body adapts as well as it can to the reduced strength of the supporting ligaments and muscles due to hormonal changes and the increase in stress on the spinal column due to postural changes. Adjustments post-partum can also ensure that as the supporting ligaments and muscles tighten they do not cause restriction and pain and that potential injuries from lifting and caring for the child are minimised.
Common pregnancy related conditions we can help with include: symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD), buttock pain, leg pain and rib cage discomfort.
