Massage therapies at So Healthy
Swedish massage uses a system of long gliding strokes, kneading, and friction techniques on the more superficial layers of muscles, generally in the direction of blood flow toward the heart, and sometimes combined with active and passive movements of the joints. It is used to promote general relaxation, improve circulation and range of motion, and relieve muscle tension. Swedish massage is the most commonly used form of massage.
Deep tissue massage is used to release chronic patterns of muscular tension using slow strokes, direct pressure, or friction directed across the grain of the muscles. It is applied with greater pressure and to deeper layers of muscle than Swedish, which is why it is called deep tissue and is effective for chronic muscular tension.
Indian Head Massage is derived from the Ayurvedic Tradition and has been practised in India for over a thousand years. The massage begins on the upper back and moves onto the shoulders and upper arms, neck, scalp and may end with a gentle face massage. As well as being relaxing, Indian Head Massage may leave you feeling revitalised and alert, with the effects lasting long after the treatment.
Aromatherapy is the use of natural oils extracted from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant to enhance psychological and physical well-being. Plant oils have been used as therapy and cosmetics for thousands of years going back to ancient Egypt, China and India.
When used in a massage, the molecules of the oil enter the body through the skin and hair follicles, and the healing properties of the chosen oils are carried around the body. When you inhale essential oils, your olfactory system – the part of your brain that is connected to smell – sends a signal to the part of your brain that controls emotions and memories. This triggers the release of chemicals that make you feel relaxed or stimulated.
