What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit
A clear, friendly guide for new patients
Booking your first appointment can feel like a big step, especially if you’re unsure what will happen. Many people come to us with musculoskeletal concerns such as back or neck discomfort, joint stiffness, muscle tension, or posture related issues.
Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable and confident before you arrive.
Below is a simple overview of what typically happens from the moment you contact us through to your first appointment.
New Patient Form
When you book your first appointment, you’ll receive a New Patient Form by email. Completing this online before your visit helps your chiropractor understand your symptoms and medical history in advance.
If you’re unable to complete the form online, you can arrive 20–25 minutes early and fill it in on our clinic tablet.
The form includes questions about:
• Current symptoms
• Previous injuries or surgeries
• Medical history
• Lifestyle and daily habits
• Work environment
• Exercise routine
If you have recent scans or medical reports, feel free to bring them along.
Wearing comfortable clothing that allows easy movement is helpful for your assessment.
Consultation
Your first consultation usually lasts around 45 minutes to an hour. This is a relaxed conversation where your chiropractor takes time to understand what you’re experiencing.
You’ll talk through:
• Your symptoms
• How long they’ve been present
• Your lifestyle and daily activities
• Work setup and posture
• Sleep habits
• Any previous injuries or relevant medical history
This discussion helps build a clear picture of what may be contributing to your discomfort. Being open and detailed allows your chiropractor to tailor the assessment and care to your needs.
Physical Examination
After your consultation, your chiropractor will carry out a thorough physical assessment.
This may include:
• Range of motion checks
• Joint and soft tissue palpation
• Reflex and muscle strength testing
• Orthopaedic and neurological tests
• Postural assessment
These tests help identify areas of tension, restriction, or irritation within the musculoskeletal system. They also guide your personalised care plan.
Report of Findings
Before any treatment begins, your chiropractor will explain:
• What they found during the assessment
• What may be contributing to your symptoms
• Whether chiropractic care is suitable for you
If chiropractic isn’t appropriate, you may be referred to your GP or another healthcare professional. You’ll also receive practical advice on movement, posture, and exercises that may support your progress.
Treatment
If your case is suitable, you will receive treatment during your first visit.
Chiropractic care may include:
• Use of a handheld chiropractic device called the Activator. This is a spring-loaded, or electronic chiropractic device used to deliver precise, low-force, high-speed impulses to the spine and joints, facilitating adjustments.
• Gentle, hands on techniques
• Joint mobilisation
• Soft tissue work
These techniques aim to improve joint mobility, ease muscle tension, and support more comfortable movement.
Alongside chiropractic care, our chiropractors may also provide practical lifestyle guidance tailored to you. This can include advice on daily habits, movement, work setup, stress, sleep, diet and general wellbeing—all of which may influence how your body feels and functions. Small changes in everyday life can play a helpful role in supporting your comfort and overall musculoskeletal health.
Conclusion
Your first visit is designed to give you clarity and confidence. By the end of your appointment, you should have:
• A clear understanding of your musculoskeletal findings
• A personalised plan tailored to your needs
• Practical guidance to support you between sessions
• Realistic expectations about your progress
This first session lays the foundation for safe, consistent care and helps you move forward with confidence.
