Postural Issues and Posture-Related Discomfort in Matlock

We all spend time in different positions throughout the day. You might work at a desk, drive for long periods, use a phone, carry a child, work on your feet or spend your evenings on the sofa.

It's not realistic, or necessary, to maintain one "perfect" posture all day. However, spending a lot of time in the same position or repeating certain movements can sometimes contribute to neck, shoulder, upper back or lower back discomfort.

At So Healthy Matlock, our chiropractors can help you understand how your everyday activities and movement patterns may relate to your symptoms and discuss practical ways of managing them.

What are postural issues?

Posture is one aspect of how we hold and move our bodies. Rather than there being one perfect posture, our bodies are designed to move between different positions throughout the day.

You may notice:
• Neck or shoulder discomfort after desk work
• Upper or mid-back stiffness
• Lower back discomfort after prolonged sitting
• Stiffness after driving
• Shoulder tension
• Discomfort that changes with movement or position
• Recurring aches associated with particular activities

The aim isn't to make you sit or stand in a single "perfect" position. Instead, we'll consider your individual circumstances and help you find practical ways to move and manage your activities more comfortably.

What can contribute to posture-related discomfort?

Modern life can mean spending a lot of time in particular positions. Factors that may be relevant include:

• Working at a desk or computer
• Looking down at a phone or tablet
• Long periods of driving
• Repetitive work
• Standing for extended periods
• Carrying children or bags
• Working from home
• Limited movement during the working day
• Returning to activity after an injury

These activities aren't necessarily harmful, but if a particular position or activity consistently causes discomfort, it may be helpful to introduce more movement or make practical changes to how you carry it out.

How do we assess posture at So Healthy?

Your chiropractor will first discuss your symptoms, health history and everyday activities before carrying out an appropriate physical assessment.

Depending on your circumstances, this may include considering:
• How you move
• Areas of stiffness or reduced movement
• Muscle strength and endurance
• Your work and home environment
• Activities that aggravate or ease your symptoms
• Previous injuries and your activity levels

We don't assume that a particular posture is automatically the cause of your symptoms. Instead, we consider posture and movement alongside your symptoms and individual circumstances.

How can chiropractic care help?

If chiropractic care is appropriate for you, your treatment will be tailored to your needs.

Depending on your assessment, this may include:
• Chiropractic techniques such as manipulation or mobilisation where appropriate
• Movement and exercise advice to support mobility, strength and general function
• Practical posture advice around your desk setup, driving position, sitting habits and daily activities

Rather than simply telling you to "sit up straight", we'll look at realistic ways to introduce more movement and variety into your routine.
Small changes that fit into your everyday life are often easier to maintain than complicated advice.

What about headaches and posture?

Some people notice headaches alongside neck or shoulder discomfort or after particular activities. However, headaches can have many different causes, so we wouldn't assume that posture is responsible.

If you're experiencing headaches alongside neck pain or stiffness, your chiropractor can discuss your symptoms and assess whether chiropractic care may be appropriate.

If your headaches are new, changing or concerning, we may recommend that you seek medical advice.

I have been using the so healthy wellness centre for many many years now and having a quality chiropractor available to see each month has helped me to keep playing tennis 🎾, plus doing many others things that I don’t think I’d be able to do if I didn’t have these regular checkups and adjustments. Many thanks
