Pain travelling from your lower back or buttock into your leg can be uncomfortable and frustrating. It can affect sitting, walking, driving, sleeping, working or taking part in the activities you enjoy.

At So Healthy Matlock, our chiropractors provide personalised care for people experiencing sciatica and leg pain. We'll take the time to understand your symptoms, how they're affecting your everyday life and whether chiropractic care may be appropriate for you.

If you're looking for sciatica treatment in Matlock, we're here to help you understand your symptoms and discuss your options.

What is sciatica?

Understanding Sciatica
Sciatica describes symptoms that can occur when the sciatic nerve, or the structures around it, become irritated or affected. Pain can travel from the lower back or buttock into the back or side of the leg and, in some cases, into the foot.

Sciatic symptoms are often associated with changes affecting the discs or joints in the lower back, although there can be a number of possible causes. An assessment can help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms.

Sciatic symptoms can vary from person to person. You may experience:
• Sharp, aching or burning pain in the buttock or leg
• Tingling or pins and needles
• Numbness in the leg, foot or toes
• Weakness in the affected leg
• Symptoms that are worse with sitting or certain movements
• Pain that may increase when coughing or sneezing

Nerve-related symptoms can also occur in other areas of the body. For example, irritation of nerves in the neck can sometimes cause pain, tingling or other symptoms travelling into the shoulder, arm or hand. This is sometimes referred to as brachialgia.

If you're experiencing symptoms such as numbness or weakness, it's important to mention these to your chiropractor so they can be considered as part of your assessment and advise whether chiropractic care is appropriate.

What can contribute to sciatica?

How
There are a number of possible factors associated with sciatica and nerve-related leg pain. In some cases, symptoms may be linked to changes affecting a disc in the lower back, which can irritate or affect a nearby nerve.

These changes can sometimes develop gradually and may be associated with factors such as:
• Repetitive lifting or bending
• Changes in activity levels
• Prolonged sitting or poor movement habits
• Previous injuries or trauma
• Changes in the joints and tissues of the lower back
• Pregnancy and the physical changes associated with it

Sometimes symptoms can appear suddenly during an otherwise simple movement, such as bending down or reaching for something. This doesn't necessarily mean that the movement itself caused the underlying problem. It may simply have been the movement that triggered symptoms from an issue that had been developing over time.

Because there can be several possible causes of sciatic symptoms, a thorough individual assessment is important. Your chiropractor will consider your symptoms, health history and physical assessment before discussing whether chiropractic care is appropriate for you.

How long does sciatica take to improve?

HFfdssvs
Everyone's experience of sciatica is different.

Some people experience relatively short-lived symptoms, while others may have symptoms for longer or experience them again in the future.

Rather than promising a particular recovery time, we'll discuss your individual circumstances and what you can reasonably expect from your care. Your chiropractor will review your progress and adapt your care where appropriate.

How do our Matlock chiropractors approach sciatica?

A
At So Healthy, good care starts with listening.

Your chiropractor will discuss your symptoms and relevant health history before carrying out an appropriate physical assessment. They'll then explain their findings and discuss the options available to you.

Where chiropractic care is appropriate, this may include:
• Spinal manipulation or mobilisation, where suitable
• Soft-tissue techniques around the lower back, hips and buttocks
• Movement and exercise advice
• Mobility, stretching or strengthening exercises
• Practical advice relating to sitting, driving, lifting and everyday activity

Your care will be tailored to your symptoms, circumstances and preferences.

I have been using the so healthy wellness centre for many many years now and having a quality chiropractor available to see each month has helped me to keep playing tennis 🎾, plus doing many others things that I don’t think I’d be able to do if I didn’t have these regular checkups and adjustments. Many thanks
