Chiropractic care during pregnancy in Matlock

Pregnancy brings many physical changes. As your pregnancy progresses, you may notice changes in your posture, movement, balance and the way you carry out everyday activities.

For some women, these changes can be accompanied by lower back pain, pelvic discomfort, hip or buttock pain, rib discomfort or general stiffness.

Although aches and pains can be common during pregnancy, you don't necessarily have to manage them on your own.

At So Healthy Matlock, our chiropractors can assess your individual symptoms and discuss whether chiropractic care may be appropriate during your pregnancy. If you're looking for pregnancy-related back or pelvic pain treatment in Matlock, our friendly team is here to help.

Common pregnancy-related symptoms

Every pregnancy is different, and symptoms can change as your pregnancy progresses.

You may experience:
• Lower back discomfort
• Pelvic pain or aching
• Hip or buttock discomfort
• Stiffness when turning in bed
• Difficulty getting comfortable when sitting or sleeping
• Rib or mid-back discomfort
• Symptoms extending into the buttock or leg
• General muscular aches and stiffness

Activities that were previously comfortable may also become more challenging as your pregnancy progresses.

What can contribute to back and pelvic pain during pregnancy?

There isn't necessarily one cause of pain during pregnancy. A combination of physical and everyday factors may contribute, including:

• Changes in posture and movement
• Changes in weight distribution
• Increased physical demands as pregnancy progresses
• Changes in activity levels
• Muscle fatigue
• Sleep disruption
• Previous back, hip or pelvic problems
• Prolonged sitting, standing, walking or lifting

Your chiropractor will consider your individual symptoms, health history and stage of pregnancy rather than assuming there is one explanation for your discomfort.

How can So Healthy help during pregnancy?

At So Healthy, we understand that you may have questions about what treatment is appropriate during pregnancy.

Your chiropractor will first discuss your symptoms, relevant health history and stage of pregnancy before carrying out an appropriate assessment.
If chiropractic care is considered suitable, your treatment will be adapted to your individual circumstances and comfort.
Depending on your needs, this may include:

Gentle chiropractic techniques
Where appropriate, your chiropractor may use gentle hands-on techniques, such as mobilisation. Treatment will be adapted according to your symptoms, comfort and stage of pregnancy.

Activator technique
Our chiropractors may also use an Activator, a small handheld instrument that delivers a controlled, low-force impulse to the area being treated.
The Activator provides an alternative to some hands-on chiropractic techniques and can be useful for people who prefer a gentler approach. Your chiropractor will discuss whether this technique is appropriate for you based on your symptoms and individual circumstances.

Movement and exercise advice
We can discuss appropriate movement, mobility and exercise based on your individual circumstances and any advice you've received from your midwife, GP or maternity team.

Practical advice
We can also discuss everyday activities that may be contributing to your discomfort, including:

• Sitting comfortably
• Getting in and out of bed or the car
• Sleeping positions
• Lifting and carrying
• Working at a desk
• Maintaining appropriate activity levels

The aim is to provide practical advice that can make everyday life a little easier.

Pregnancy and pelvic pain

Pregnancy-related pelvic pain can affect the lower back, pelvis, hips, buttocks and thighs.

You may find activities such as walking, climbing stairs, turning in bed or getting in and out of a car uncomfortable. If you're experiencing pelvic or lower back pain during pregnancy, your chiropractor can assess your individual circumstances and discuss whether chiropractic care may be appropriate.

If your symptoms require assessment by your midwife, GP or another healthcare professional, we'll advise you accordingly.

What if I already have back pain?

If you experienced back pain before becoming pregnant, you may notice changes in your symptoms as your pregnancy progresses.

Tell your chiropractor about any previous injuries, diagnoses or treatment you've received. This information can help us understand your circumstances and decide whether chiropractic care is appropriate.

Your care, your pregnancy

We know that pregnancy can bring plenty of questions about what you should and shouldn't do.

At So Healthy, we want you to feel comfortable asking questions and involved in decisions about your care.
We'll explain what we're recommending and discuss any relevant alternatives with you. Your care will be adapted to your individual needs rather than following a standard pregnancy programme.

I have been using the so healthy wellness centre for many many years now and having a quality chiropractor available to see each month has helped me to keep playing tennis 🎾, plus doing many others things that I don’t think I’d be able to do if I didn’t have these regular checkups and adjustments. Many thanks
